HYGIENE COUNCIL SOUTH AFRICA

80% of all infectious agents are spread through hand contact with the environment or other people.*

A whole spectrum of communicable diseases, from winter coughs and 24-hour stomach bugs to killer diseases like Typhoid, flourish in conditions of inadequate personal hygiene and ripple through our communities affecting families, friends and work colleagues.

But there is a way to stave off these diseases – good personal hygiene.

We are surrounded by conflicting information about the benefits of hygiene, and sometimes it’s difficult to know what – or who – to trust.

Is too much disinfection bad for our natural immune system? When is the best time to wash our hands? Where do most germs lurk around the home? Where are you most likely to pick up food poisoning – a restaurant or the home?

To cut though the information overload and provide the public with simple straight forward guidelines about domestic sanitation, the Hygiene Council was set up in 2006.
